Budget frames cost $200-$300 and high-quality frames cost $400-$800. For any artist, framing is always a pervasive problem and sometimes a crippling cost. Fortunately, with a little bit of knowledge and the right tools and materials, it doesn’t have to be you can build the highest possible quality frame for approximately $40. This class will cover everything from basic woodworking with hand tools to cutting glass and archivally matting artwork. By the end of this class, you will have a complete frame and all of the knowledge you need to make your own frames going forward.

Beginning with traditional forms of drawing, this 7-week class will start by teaching comparative measurement and drawing from direct observation. Next this class will teach students how to work with photographs and use cameras as a means of augmenting their creativity instead of limiting it. Finally, this class will teach students how to find inspiration from various sources throughout art history and set students down the path towards understanding composition.

Making Floating Frames for Painting with Hand Tools - with William Demaria (Session 2)

There are a lot less steps involved in making a frame from scratch for a painting than to make a frame for works on paper. That being said, there still are a couple of tricks that are helpful to know to make a frame by hand at a professional level. This class will teach you everything you need to get started and allow you to frame 2-3 paintings.

Oil Painting like the Old Masters (Weekly - 11 Weeks - Adults) with William Demaria

In this class, students will learn how to think about their artwork in layers and explore some of the mysterious interactions of color that captivated artists throughout history. Over this 11-week class, students will learn different methods to efficiently sketch with paint, experiment with various methods layering paint, and make artwork that is in dialogue with artists through history.

Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19, 11: A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
Explore using various media (printmaking, collage, painting) to create your monotype artwork. In this workshop we will discuss the principles and elements of design, composition, and combining drawing, texture, and color to create a monotype of an image using line on plexiglass, collage, and painting. Students will learn to transfer an image to paper, add collage materials, and paint onto the image to create final one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork.

Introduction to Basic Watercolor with Christine Vineyard

Students will learn how to use several different types of watercolor paints (tube, liquid and pencils) and approach them in a contemporary way using many household items to manipulate the paint. The class is designed as an introduction to watercolor painting and techniques and is great for people with little to no prior experience who are interested in learning more.
Block Printed Accordion Fold Book with Anne Barnes - 2 Day Workshop - Adults
Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17, 2024 from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.
In this two-part workshop we will use a simple block printing technique to create an organic floral pattern. Then using watercolor paint and other art mediums, learn to hand tint and add decorative detail to the visual narrative, which will then be made into a beautiful accordion fold artist’s book.

Drawing skills are not necessary. Nina Muys is an experienced printmaker and one of the founders of the Washington Printmakers Gallery.

Making Botanical Inks with Christine Harrison • Online Workshop
Saturday, January 6 & Sunday, January 7th 1:00 - 3:00 P.M.
On Saturday, using local tannin rich botanicals Christine will show how to create simple inks. Simmering onion skins, eucalyptus leaves, rose leaves or pomegranate skins. Make your own ink along with instructor or just watch and try later.
On Sunday, Christine will demonstrate making lake pigment for inks, paint or printing inks. This process will be shown in class and the different stages but students will complete on their own.
