Artist Statement
My prints are built from photographs. While some prints are in fact single photographs, most are “constructed prints" made from bits and pieces of multiple photographs, ranging from a few to many pieces, occasionally hundreds. Essentially, I use the image to edit itself – lifting bits of color or components of design from one area and adding it to another. The end result can be a long way from the original image. For me, a successful piece works at multiple levels: from a distance it has impact and coherence; the midrange shows the piece as primarily intended; and the close-up provides fine detail, including the texture of paper and ink.
I use a digital camera and digital tools (Photoshop and InDesign) to create my work. Then I do the printing myself, using a Canon PRO4000 44" printer, pigment ink and several types of highest quality paper. This allows me to study a piece and modify it as often as necessary to reach the right final point– both a luxury and a burden. Although digital tools are the means of creating my work, my ultimate goal is image as print, and print as object. The digital image is simply a preliminary stage. I consider myself a photographer/printmaker – it just depends on where I am in the process. The goal is always the same: a strong, beautiful and carefully crafted object: a fine print on paper.
My work has evolved from an original emphasis on graphic design to include the area of landscape construction, interiors, and some portraits.
