Welcome to Transitions, an exhibition that celebrates three artists new to the Washington Printmakers Gallery. This collection features moments in time caught and captured by photographer Doug Hochberg, abstract prints of Kristine DeNinno that create a dialogue between two-dimensional surfaces and three-dimensional space, and woodblock prints of Catherine Rubin woven from moments of revelation and introspection.

Each piece invites viewers to explore techniques and mediums that all reveal transitions of time and emotion.

Artist talk: Saturday, October 12, 2-3:00 pm
Kristine DeNinno

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a psychologist, was intrigued by artists who lost themselves in their work, and he became known for creating "flow theory" — referring to a state of being in which people are so immersed in the joy of their work or activity “that nothing else seems to matter.” I studied and wrote extensively on flow state during graduate school, and I also practiced it, working in the print studio for hours. As a working mother and educator, it is harder to find time for creating.

This series of five large scale prints focuses on the idea of women’s work. With this method, I first created the large scale monoprints and then incorporated fiber art elements, representing women’s work. Sewing has long been a traditional activity for women, linked to domesticity, feminine virtues, and rebellion. The stitches represent the stops and starts of flow state.
