THE TEXTURE OF TIME
Woodblock Prints: Catherine Rubin
April 3 to April 27, 2025
opening reception: Saturday, April 5, 4-6:00 pm
Often, in thinking of time, we see it as linear: a continuous line with the past behind us, the present unfolding, and the future ahead. But time is not a straight path. It is laid in layers, stacked upon each other, like grains of sand on a beach shifting in place from the forces of wind and water. In my work, I aim to express these layers – both the layers of time itself and the texture of the place where they occurred. The result is a compilation of those moments: what we have seen, heard, and most importantly, felt.
My primary working process is reduction woodblock, meaning that the block is gradually destroyed as the print is created. This reflects both the nature of our experience and lends itself to the capture of multiple moments expressed as a single image. The print can never be replicated – it is built layer by layer, until almost nothing remains of the wood block. These are moments carved in wood, moments captured where there was a contrast felt in the layers of time and experience. It is these fleeting moments of lightness, where many layers can be felt at once, that I wish to share with the viewer – moments not simply confined to the past, but unfolding within us all at once.
