It’s no coincidence that MIXED TAKES evokes both the infamous 1980s mixtapes (personalized music playlist, for those too young to remember) and the notorious shaming word mistakes. But is there really any such thing as a mistake when it comes to the happy accidents that are part of the creative process?  MIXED TAKES aptly describes my process of using different registrations, passes and media as “takes” to employ rhythm and movement in creating my personal play list (emphasis on play). 

Still a painter at heart, I love using printmaking techniques as an adjunct in building work and creating relationships and dialogues between pieces. I have been exploring viscosity print techniques, which share intriguing qualities with painting in oil – a first love. The show contains several examples of oil paintings and related viscosity prints.

Other pieces are related through the use of found objects – in this case, industrial paint stir sticks, which gave birth to Indigo Trail, Bamboo Sun, and Glyph. Providing a range of final results or takes, my play and exploration using woodcut and viscosity techniques has resulted in a mixtape / mixed take of my creative world.

Susan Wooddell Campbell embraces a variety of different media. She has studied paper making, painting, printmaking, and sculpture at the Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center, The Art League of Alexandria, Washington Studio School, and the Corcoran School of Art, all in the greater Washington DC area. Her work has been shown in multiple exhibits, and she has had several commissions for the Anacostia Watershed Society. Additionally, she fulfilled all the studio components for a paintings major at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. Wooddell Campbell joined the Washington Printmakers Gallery in 2021.
