Matina Marki Tillman Receives Award in “Imprint 2024” National Print Exhibition

Matina Marki Tillman’s print “Fools’ Way” was selected for an honorable mention award in Maryland Federation of Art’s “Imprint 2024,” an open national juried exhibition.

The show was on display during August and September, and can continue to be viewed at:  https://mdfedart-impt2024.artcall.org/pages/web-gallery?page=3.  This print comes from her third Humanography series, “Paramythia,” her ongoing collection of contemporary fairy tales.

The exhibition was juried by Elizabeth M. Rudy, Associate Curator of Prints at the Harvard Art Museums, where she stewards the collection of European and American prints from the 15th century to the modern era.

Solar plate etching, pencil additions (2023), 9 x 12 in., varied edition of 10

At the virtual awards ceremony, the juror opened the presentation of the prints with comments about “Fools’ Way.”  In her own words:  “I was immediately struck by this print, and specifically by its combination of presence and absence.  I loved how an ephemeral performance, that is the gestures and the dancers and the music, were there juxtaposed with solid, immovable stone architecture.  I was also drawn to the incessant play of light and shadow throughout the composition.  It’s as if there’s something haunting here, but it coexists with joy to my eye.  I found the co-mingling of opposites to be evocative and thought provoking.”  The awards ceremony can be viewed in its entirety at the following link (with the “Fools’ Way” commentary immediately following the juror’s 4 minute introduction):

Matina lost her beloved mother and precious friend, Chrysavgi Marki, suddenly during the closing days of the exhibition.  She dedicates this award to her memory.
