Artist Statement

Printmaking is simple, never precious. It requires nothing more than some ink, paper and a matrix or surface to print off. Images and knowledge are meant to be spread and to be shared. Printmaking allows an image to be multiplied, thus making it more accessible.

I generally use traditional printmaking methods, etching onto copper or zinc plates and occasionally I use solar plates. The paper is run by hand, under great pressure, through the etching press. Something happens the first time I lift the paper off of a new plate.

I never know what I will find. It is as if the materials themselves create something I am not responsible for. Allowing the marks on the plate to guide me, I go by feel, not knowing exactly what will happen. I always experience this sense of discovery, of not knowing.

My work tends toward a certain darkness, in palette and in spirit. Literary and storybook in nature, animals often appear in my prints. There is a carnival flavor to these characters and the spaces they inhabit. The exhibition Punctuation is inspired by the writing of Raquel Vogl. In fact the author’s own hand writing was incorporated onto these pages. “Friends” represents a continuation of an ongoing series.
