Pressing Matters:
Print in the Digital Age
March 2 – May 24, 2018
at Maplewood Park Place.
This exhibit was first displayed at the Washington Printmakers Gallery in January and February, 2018. Pressing Matters – Print in the Digital Age continues at Maplewood Park Place, 9707 Old Georgetown Rd, Bethesda, Maryland 20814.
The exhibit asks the question “What is a print these days and how has technology affected the art of printmaking and print marketing?”
Through much of human history, the making of multiple images has shaped political and social movements. Today, we turn to our smart phones to learn about the world and current events, in the past, people turned to prints and broadsheets that were printed by hand on paper.
Hand-pulled prints have come a long way since the Middle Ages when prints were created by using acid, engraving tools and later lithography and silkscreen. With the advance of digital photography, computers, and smart phones, processes have changed and lines have become blurred.
In this show the artists chose to either demonstrate how their technique has been affected by technology or how today’s constant barrage of news has influenced the topic of their work. They also explore how today’s artists use both digital media and hard copy in their practice.
