The Unbroken Line: A Cast of Characters grew out of a challenge artist Terry Svat faced years ago, when invited to participate in an installation at George Washington University. The call to artists asked for work on 8x8 canvases. Svat, being a printmaker, rarely touched a canvas. She did, however, have a large collection of printed material, which she began cutting and recombining. The result: Three-dimensional print-collages on a canvas surface.

These print collages include imagery of houses, human archetypes. Regarding this work, Svat says, “As it began to grow I was surprised to see that there was continuity and a connectedness to it all. Since most of my work through the years has been created in series, it took a while to see that there was a thread or line running through all of it dealing with life, death, and rebirth.” This unbroken line is apparent in her figures, which march from canvas to canvas under cities, trees, the sun and the moon, creating a visual record of the journey of life.
