Kicking off the 2013 Press Room Mini Solos is Italian-Naturalized American Maria Sofia Caligiuri and her unique paper creations. These embossed and printed works explore the rustic marine wilderness of her childhood home of Calabria (in southern Italy, on top of the foot of the “boot”). Some of the works focus on the natural elements of a pristine shore-line, such as shells, while others remind the viewer of the sometimes detrimental human influences upon the coast. All the works, Caligiuri tells us, are a reminder that “the impermanence of all phenomena underlies the search for the meaning of life.”

Maria Sofia Caligiuri studied under Master Etcher Arnoldo Ciarrocchi, among others, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Since then, her work has been included in numerous exhibitions in Italy and the US, including the Museum of Women in the Arts, World Bank, and Corcoran Archives shows. Additionally, she has illustrated several Italian journals and published two books, Le Novellette, and The Fief, a store of love and other virtues. Ms. Caligiuri now resides in Kensington, MD.

Join Ms. Caligiuri at the opening reception of all of WPG’s January exhibitions on Saturday, January 5, 1-4 pm.
