Documentary Film Screening & Discussion
of Susan Goldman’s Midwest Matrix®
Saturday, May 19, 2018, 3–5pm

We will screen “Midwest Matrix® — Genealogy of American Printmaking: Oral History of the Post-World-War-II Midwest Movement” and then discuss the film with producer/director Susan Goldman. The film is a substantive study of post-WWII printmaking to present, and documents the synergy among Midwest universities, workshops, and their participants. It tells the story how Midwestern ateliers contributed fundamentally to change the course in American printmaking and American art.

Midwest Matrix® features more than fifty interviews of printmaking greats including master printers Garo Antreasian, Jack Lemon, Kenneth Tyler, William Weege, and artists Sid Chafetz, Warrington Colescott, Sam Gilliam, Ellen Lanyon, Mauricio Lasansky, Rudy Pozzatti, all who were able to continue their education through the passing of the GI Bill. Midwest Matrix® documents these groundbreaking artists’ personal accounts about their art, their training, and involvement with the development of print departments, workshops, and encounters with students.
