Artist Statement

Resonance is a musical term meaning echoing in deep tone or a sound produced by a body vibrating in sympathy with a aneighboring source of sound. In my creative process I feel as though my inner self is echoing the object in fornt of me, be it a flower or a landscape of particular beauty. This strong response to nature has been significant to me as long as I can remember and has guided by art making for the past 30 years.

My studio is on the Eastern shore of Maryland on a remote island called "Taylors Island". The island is I believe the last frontier in an overdeveloped world and is a place of wild beauty and tranquility. From my water front studio I see shimmering water, marsh grasses, boats, waterfowl and summer gardens.

My form of expression is carbogravure, a method of printmaking that I experimented with to fit my own needs. This variant of a collagraph allows me a direct and painterly approach to my subject matter. My plate is basically a piece of cardboard, covered with gesso which I incise with a pencil. The tonal areas are achieved with a mixture of carborundum and acrylic and then inked and pritned as a regular etchign plate. I use the select wiping method and triple drop the plate to achieve my luminescent colors.

Biography

Muys was born in Austria and is a founding member and past president of the Washington Printmakers Gallery. Muys has exhibited extensively thoughout the United States as well as Argentina, Russia, Belgium and Egypt. She received her BA from the University of Maryland and studied at the Corcoran College of Art and the Acadmy of Fine Arts in Rome. Her prints are in the colletion of the National Musuem of Women in the Arts, The Museum of Modern Art - Buenos Aires, Argentina, The White House and numerous private collections in Holland, Belgium, Germany and the United States.
